St Nicholas Convent in Ft Myers, FL, Hosts an Icon-Painting Workshop (Photo-report)

From as far away as Canada and Virginia, pilgrims came to St Nicholas Monastery in North Fort Myers, FL, to participate in an iconography workshop from February 24-28, 2014. The workshop was led by Hieromonk Silouan (Justiniano), of Holy Cross Monastery in East Setauket, NY, of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. Among the hands-on skills that participants learned were transferring icons to a gessoed board, incising and inking lines, grinding and mixing egg-tempera pigments, applying gold leaf, lightening depicted figures from dark to light with various stages of highlights, and various other techniques.
