A Press Conference on the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church is Held

On December 2, 2017, after the final plenary session of the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church concluded, at which Decrees and an Epistle were adopted, the press center of the Hall of Councils of Christ the Savior Cathedral held a press conference.

Participating were His Eminence Metropolitan Isidor of Smolensk and Dorogobuzhsk; His Eminence Archbishop Kliment, President of the Synodal Information Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church; His Grace Bishop Gennady of Kaskelensk, member of the Editorial Board of the Council of Bishops; Vladimir V R Legoida, Head of the MP Synodal Department of Relations with Society and the Media; and Priest Alexander Volkov, Head of the Press Corps of the Moscow Patriarchate.

“The Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church just concluded. An ‘Epistle of the Sacred Council of Bishops to the Clergy, Monastics and All Faithful children of the Russian Orthodox Church’ and Decrees of the Sacred Council of Bishops were adopted,” said Fr Alexander. He added that a final plenary session of the Council was being held on that day. Primates as well as representatives of Local Orthodox Churches participating, who will read corresponding greetings to the Council on the centennial of the reestablishment of the Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Mr Legoida thanked the journalists for their interest in the work of the Council. “Naturally, we all carefully followed the publication of the work of our Council these past days, and we express our heartfelt gratitude for the quality of reporting,” he said.

Fr Alexander listed the documents deliberated upon and adopted at the Council of Bishops. These include the “Regulation on Monasteries and Monastics,” the decrees “On the Church-Wide Glorification of Locally-Venerated Saints,” “On Amendments and Supplements to the Regulations of the Russian Orthodox Church and Other Documents of the Russian Orthodox Church,” “On the Election of Members of the Ecclesiastical Court of the Russian Orthodox Church,” “On the Appeal of Former Metropolitan Philaret of Kiev and All Ukraine,” the document “On Canonical Aspects of Church Marriage,” as well as the aforementioned documents.

A question-and-answer period then followed.
